Different Steamed rices- Rice Week

So many people just steam rice in normal ways without even the slightest hint of difference. However, have you tried steaming it with the addition of herbs or even a different stock? There are many different ways in which you can enhance your rice and it is so simplistic to do. With a slight sprinkle of some herbs it can drastically improve it by imparting a slight aroma at times or even flavour. This can include the ever so famous coconut rice from Thailand, or Singapore's chicken rice, rice pilaf or any types that may stem from it. For simplicity we will give three recipes of a pilaf, chicken rice, and a coconut rice! We hope you try even one of these soon!

Chicken Rice

Starting with one of the national dishes of Singapore, Chicken rice is one of the most flavourful rices you can get today. With a salty based flavour, it accentuates and pairs with one of the most tasty dishes in their ever so famous Hainanese Chicken rice. This rice is done simply with chicken stock, shallots, garlic and ginger. The recipe goes like this:

  1. Using vegetable oil, fry the shallots, garlic, ginger, and rice until the rice is lathered in the scent and the ingredients are fragrant

  2. Put the rice and ingredients in a rice cooker or pot then instead of water use the proportionate amount chicken stock to rice in order to cook it!

  3. Serve once done!

Ingredients

-Chicken stock

-2 stalks Shallots

-2 cloves garlic

-1 ounce ginger

-Jasmine Rice (or white rice)

Coconut Rice

Second up will be coconut rice which can be commonly found in many South Eastern Asian cuisines most notably in Thailand. It is in a way creamy and refreshing at the same time. Whilst it is lighter in flavour in comparison to chicken rice; it is a very nice accent which elevates your rice while not interfering with your other dishes. Best made with Jasmine rice as well; it only requires 4 core ingredients. Paired extremely well with any type of curry and being so easy you should give it a try it now below!

  1. Wash your rice, then place it in your pot or rice cooker

  2. Pour around half coconut milk, half water to the amount of water you'd normally cook rice with

  3. Place sugar and salt in as well!

  4. Cook rice as per usual then serve with cilantro if you want!

Ingredients

-1 cup Rice (preferably jasmine rice)

-1/2 cup Coconut milk

-1 cup water

-1 teaspoon sugar

-1 teaspoon salt

Rice Pilaf

Our final type of rice is rice pilaf for today! Known pretty much as a simple upgrade to your regular steamed rice; it is extremely easy to make. A simple frying of your rice with a coat of oil and using slightly less water in order to enrich your rice is so simple but so many people do not try! We hope you try our mushroom rice pilaf!

  1. Rinse your rice

  2. Using vegetable oil, fry your rice, mushrooms and onions until your rice is lathered with oil and your ingredients are nearly cooked

  3. Steam the rice using slighly less water than you would usually use whether in a pot or rice cooker
